The database capability is tightly built into the language and is very easy to use for the programmer since the representation is like a simple multiply subscripted array. These structures, globals in MUMPS terminology, are managed on persistent devices like hard drives. The system has very sophisticated techniques to manage caching, buffering, compression and sorting all intrinsic to the language. Portability and standardization has been a historic priority over many iterations in operating systems and hardware over the long history of MUMPS. MUMPS is different from now-standard programming languages which restrict the programmer from doing anything unusual. It is however, a joy to program in because of its clean definitions and compact code. It has always been very efficient to program and test because of the interpreted nature provided what complicated IDEs now do for other languages.
